Nephrite Jade
Jade is one of the oldest gemstones known, with a history stretching back more than 7,000 years.
Jade refers to two crystals, one of which is Nephrite Jade and the other is Jadeite. The two types of Jade are essentially identical in appearance. Nephrite occurs mainly in white and grey, with variants in dark green, reddish brown and black. Jadeite occurs in a wider range of colours, including green, lavender, yellow, black and white.
Jade is mined all over the world, including Burma, Guatemala, and Russia. The mining of Nephrite Jade takes place in Siberia, China, Korea, and New Zealand. All of the Jade mined in China is Nephrite and it is a stone that has been admired in China for over 4000 years, commonly associated with luck and prosperity.
During the Stone Age, it is believed that weapons and tools were constructed using Jade for its toughness. Artists also used Jade to produce decorative and ritualistic objects.
