Lapis Lazuli Chipped Bracelet

This bold blue crystal,  speckled with Pyrite gold is sourced from Northern Afghanistan. 
 
It is believed that Cleopatra of the Ancient Egyptians used to ground Lapis down and use it as her deep blue eye shadow with gold-coloured pyrite flecks.
 
Artists used to grind Lapis Lazuli down into a powder to use it for their paintings.  It was called Ultramarine. Ultramarine was the finest and most expensive blue used by Renaissance painters. It was often used for the robes of the Virgin Mary, and symbolized holiness and humility. It remained an extremely expensive pigment until a synthetic ultramarine was invented in 1826.
